Playing a High Card Hand

I don't recommend spending too much time on this topic, as there is only one way to play the hand.  If you've been given seven cards and you don't even have a pair, you are unlikely to win both hands and the bet.  It happens.  In fact, statistically you will be dealt no pairs (or better) a little over 16% of the time.  Don't worry, though, because if you set your hand optimally you have a reasonable chance to win the 2nd high hand and get a push.

The good news is that it will also happen to the dealer at the same rate.  So if you're looking at 7 unmatched cards, there's a 16% chance the dealer is as well!  Set you hand properly and you might have a chance to win the bet.  Never ever just give up!

Follow this simple strategy:

  • Take your highest card and put it in the high hand
  • Take your second and third high cards and put them in the 2nd high hand
  • Put the rest in the high hand.
Example:  Ace of Clubs King of Clubs ten of spades nine of hearts seven of diamonds six of spades two of clubs would be set thus:

2nd high:   King of Clubs ten of spades

High hand:  Ace of Clubs nine of hearts seven of diamonds six of spades two of clubs

This positions you for the best chance to win the 2nd high hand and get a push.

That's all you can do.  Best of luck!
