Playing Straight Flushes

In general the difference in power rankings between a flush and a straight flush is small enough that you could just use the guidance for flushes to determine how to set your hand.  Their are a few differences, however, that we will explain here.

Straight flush with bug and a pair

If you can play the pair in your second high hand and still play the straight flush (or the straight or the flush) in thehigh hand, then this is your play.

It is better to play the pair in the high hand (breaking up your straight flush) in the following circumstances:

  • Your pair is 99 thru QQ AND
  • EITHER your natural (not the bug) high straight flush card is a K
  • OR your natural high straight flush card is a Q and you have a singleton K

In all other cases, keep your straight flush together.

Straight flush and two pair

If you can play a pair in your 2nd high hand and still have a straight flush, then this is your preferred play.  If removing either pair destroys your straight flush then you must consider playing the hand as two pair.  Use this general guidance to decide your best strategy:

If the sum of your two pair value is 9 or less, play the straight flush.

I the sum of your two pair value is 10 or greater, play as two pair and use the two pair guidance to determine how to set the hand.
